Restoring a Settled Decorative Walkway Without Replacing the Concrete
Stamped concrete walkways add color, character, and curb appeal to a property. However, decorative concrete can still settle when the soil beneath it shifts or washes away.
That was the problem at this Independence home.
Several sections of the colored, stamped concrete walkway had begun to sink. A few edges had dropped enough to create uneven transitions between the adjoining slabs.

The Challenge

Polyurethane foam could be injected beneath the concrete through small, carefully positioned access holes.
As the foam expanded, it would fill the unsupported areas and allow the crew to gradually raise the settled sections.
This approach addressed the support problem beneath the walkway while protecting the homeowner’s investment in the decorative concrete.
The Fix: Our 3-Step Process
Step 1: Drill
Small access holes were carefully drilled through the affected walkway sections.
Whenever possible, the holes were positioned within or near the grout lines of the stamped pattern. This helped make the repair less noticeable and reduced unnecessary disruption to the decorative surface.
The placement of each hole also allowed the crew to reach the voids beneath the settled sections and control how the concrete moved during lifting.
Step 2: Pump
High-density polyurethane foam was injected beneath the walkway.
As the material expanded, it filled empty spaces beneath the concrete and restored support to the affected sections.
The expanding foam also allowed the crew to gradually lift the sunken slabs toward the desired elevation. The movement was carefully monitored to improve the transitions between sections without placing unnecessary stress on the existing concrete.
The foam also filled several small tunnels and open spaces beneath the walkway that may have been created by erosion or unwanted animals.
Step 3: Patch
Once the walkway had been lifted and stabilized, the access holes were sealed using a carefully selected concrete patch.
The crew worked to keep the patched areas as subtle as possible while protecting the surrounding stamped pattern.
The repaired walkway was then cleaned and prepared for normal use.
Because polyurethane foam cures quickly, the walkway did not require the extended downtime associated with newly poured concrete.
The Results
The stamped concrete walkway was successfully lifted and supported while keeping the existing decorative surface in place.
After the repair, the walkway was:
- Better aligned between adjoining sections
- Safer for family members and visitors
- Free from the most noticeable trip hazards

- More visually consistent
